  • Prof. Jacob Punchaichira Varghese Anchil, Pandankary, jacobpunchaichira (guest) wrote 18 years ago:
This is the ancestoral house of Prof. Jacob Varghese also known as Chakkamma Punchaichira . He is the youngest of the seven children of Thomas Varghese (Kariachan Punchaichira) and Thresiamma Varghese (pennamma). Thomas Varghese was the eldest son of Thommachan (Thomas) Punchaichira who was the third of the four sons and two daughters of the great Varghese (Varugichan) Punchaichira. Punchaichira family is an encient St Thomas Christians ("Nasrani Mappilla")family believed to be Christianised from a Namboothiry Brahmin family of encient Kuravilangadu in the firsat century AD. The Origins of this family and its magration from Kuravilangadu to Muttar of the encient Thekkamkore kingdome and later to Pandankary some time in the 1700s are part of grandmother stories mingled with some land right/ownership records. One of the Great ancestors of this Nasrani family who were great exponents of martial arts are believed to have defended the Thekkankore Kingdome, single handedly, against the invasion from the Kilimanoor Kingdom king's forces who were Brahmins. As the regular Nair(a Hindu cast) forces of Thekkankore King were afraid to commit "Brahmahathya" (Killing of Brahmin who were considere the devine priestly caste) the great Edakkary (Original name of Punchaichira family) Varkey Mooppinnu (is belived to have taken over as Commander in Chief of the King and done the job with his sons nephews and martial arts students/desciples. As a result , there is a belief in the family that the family got a curse that it won't have boys born and living long enough to be a warrior. This explains why Punchaichira family did not grow much in numbers for centuries. It is also believed that one of the great grandmothers' is believed to have offered special rites in Niranam Church (Which was one of the seven original churches established by st Thomas in the first century, and now part of the Orthodox Nasrani(syrian) Christians)to get rid of the this curse. Thus this family's history is mixed with Christian beliefs and Hindu "superstitions" which grandmothers described to children over generations half in jest ang half seriously and passed over genarations. However part of the land estate awarded by the Thekkankore king, 400 para (40 acres) paddy field in the "Puthenvarambinakam padam" remained in the custody of the family until 21st century,( Tha last part of it was sold by late Mr Cheriyappy punchaichira who is the younger brother of the famous Varghese Augustian of Punchaichira who was the first elected member of the state legislature from the region after India's Independence.), though all of the other properties were lost over centuries.
